This new version of Emma is like a delicious confection in scenery and costume, with a sharp, subtle sense of humor. Bill Nighy is terrific as Emma’s father. Great soundtrack, too!

I really loved The Half of It, artfully directed by Alice Wu. Netflix has been offering some interesting YA-friendly releases lately. In this sone, Ellie Chu is mostly focused on keeping her head down and herself and her widowed father afloat with her side hustle of selling term papers to her classmates. When she gets enlisted to write a love letter, everything in her world changes. At its core, it’s the Cyrano story, but the characters are really compelling and the relationships become a lot more complicated. The actors, especially Leah Lewis (Ellie Chu) are incredible.

Stream it on Netflix.

The movie is based on the memoir of a woman who was brought up in a very orthodox Jewish family and it is about how she grew up and eventually left.  The first part of the movie follows the book pretty closely but the rest does not.  The author did consult on the movie so it is pretty accurate.

Stream it on Netflix.

This is a fun murder mystery featuring a bickering couple who stumbles into a political conspiracy. Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani are a fun pair.
